TRIP (Tax Rebate For International VFX Production)

40% TAX REBATE

The French Tax Rebate for International Production (TRIP) gives you 30% rebate on your French VFX studio bill, provided you spend at least €250k in eligible expenditures. 10% bonus available for projects with more than €2M of VFX-related eligible expenditure.

Feel free to contact us at for assistance with France’s Tax Rebate.

HOW TO GET THE TRIP?

You have to work with a French Production Service Company (which can be a VFX studio or another French Production company).
The French company will fill the application for your project and submit it to the CNC.
Provisional qualification is generally given within a month of submission.

HOW TO QUALIFY?

To qualify to the TRIP as a VFX-only project, your project must:

  • Be a live-action project
  • Spend at least €250K in eligible expenditures
  • Pass a cultural test specifically designed for VFX projects

HOW TO GET THE 10% VFX BONUS (AND THEREFORE 40% TAX REBATE)?

The 10% bonus applies to VFX-intensive projects with more than €2M of VFX-related eligible French expenditure.
Once the €2M threshold is passed, the 40% tax rebate applies on all of a project’s eligible spends, including live action spends which are not VFX-related.

THE CULTURAL TEST FOR VFX PROJECTS

To qualify, VFX-only projects must pass the “VFX Test”, which is divided into three distinct sections:

  • The first section awards points for featuring characters of European or undefined origin — including creatures, non-humanoids, or animals.
  • The second section evaluates the involvement of French and European creative talents.
  • The third section focuses on the participation of French companies in the production.

This test is generally straightforward for any VFX project significantly produced in France. Notable examples that have qualified for the TRIP incentive include:
The Last Duel by Ridley Scott, The Nun II by Michael Chavez, Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049

QUALIFYING EXPENDITURES

To be eligible, the expenditures listed below must be incurred in France by the Production Service Company that submitted the French Tax Rebate for International Production application.
For VFX projects, the vast majority of expenses are eligible. The tax rebate amounts to 30% of eligible pre-tax expenditures, capped at €30 million per project.
An additional 10% bonus — bringing the rebate to 40% — is granted to projects with more than €2 million in VFX-related spending.
