Paths to the set or into animation and postproduction studios are varied—scientific studies, travel, preparatory art classes, internships… everything is possible if you find your way.

At the Artistic Training Fair in Paris Montreuil Expo, Télérama spoke with Loriane Lucas, VFX Producer at MPC, who organizes the work of digital VFX teams on both big-budget American series and French auteur films.

What does your job involve in film production?
Working alongside the VFX Supervisor, who ensures the technical and artistic quality of the director’s vision, we step in at different stages of a project. From the script stage, we estimate the VFX budget, which is adjusted as production progresses. We are also present on set for shots involving effects, helping the crew optimize filming. After shooting, I recruit specialists for specific effects and ensure the director is satisfied with our work.

Which training is best for this role?
Several private schools in France provide excellent postproduction training, but university programs can also be relevant. I personally did two years of science at university, then earned a degree in audiovisual studies and a master’s in image and sound effects at the University of Valenciennes. I started in film scanning when the industry still worked with physical film, then moved into postproduction supervision before transitioning to VFX production.

What qualities make a good VFX producer?
There are many paths into production, but patience is essential. Strong interpersonal skills are key for understanding the film team’s needs and communicating constraints. Stress management is important, as some moments can be intense! The job is enjoyable because each project is unique and suits those who prefer working in a structured environment.
