At the 2025 edition of The American French Film Festival (TAFFF), the Happy Hour Talks opened with a panel dedicated to the excellence of French visual effects, featuring studios MPC, BUF and Mac Guff.

The discussion was built around three emblematic projects: Colours of Time (La Venue de l’Avenir) for MPC, 13 Jours et 13 Nuits for BUF, and L’Homme qui rétrécit for Mac Guff. MPC was represented by Béatrice Bauwens, Head of MPC Paris & Liège, who joined the conversation led by Variety and two fellow French VFX supervisors and producers.

The panel explored what they called the “French Touch” in VFX. Speakers looked at how this creative identity enhances a wide range of genres, from auteur cinema to fantasy, and how its artistic signature fits within distribution strategies for the American market.

Béatrice shared insights from La Venue de l’Avenir, where MPC recreated a CG version of 1895 Paris and its iconic landmarks. The goal was not only historical accuracy, but also an emotional bridge between eras. She explained that the best visual effects are often invisible—serving narrative and performance rather than overwhelming them.

The conversation highlighted several key ideas:
• French VFX often begins with strong practical foundations, supported by set design, real locations, and actors interacting with tangible environments. VFX then builds on this to enhance scale, urgency, or emotion.
• Creativity remains central, reinforced by close, collaborative relationships with directors. Unlike the more segmented, industrialized American pipeline, French VFX supervisors are often involved very early in the creative process, shaping visual ideas hand-in-hand with filmmakers.
• France benefits from a strong animation and filmmaking tradition, supported by renowned cinema and technical schools that produce highly skilled artists and technicians.

As Béatrice noted, this mix of artistry, independence, and experimentation—combined with growing tax incentives—continues to attract major international productions. It creates a virtuous cycle, raising the level of talent and expanding opportunities for filmmakers at home and abroad.

This year, MPC is proud to be a Supporting Sponsor of The American French Film Festival 2025. It is a way to affirm our commitment to French creators, producers, and talent. Through this partnership, we aim to contribute to the impact of French cinema in the United States and worldwide, and support the artists and technicians who shape its visual richness.
